ABOUT
The Division of Environmental and Biomolecular Systems (EBS) is a unique multidisciplinary program that combines study of the physical, chemical, and biological processes that affect human and environmental health.

VISION
As the world increasingly looks to technology to address many environmental and health issues—such as exposure to toxic substances, water quality, climate change, and other anthropogenic impacts—today’s scientists must draw from a wide range of technical fields, including computer science, bioinformatics, nanotechnology, and many other traditional and emerging disciplines.
EBS has research and educational strengths in four complementary areas where our faculty have strong international reputations (environmental chemistry, metallobiochemistry, microbial molecular biology, and hydrodynamic modeling). Emerging areas of strength include sensors, nanotechnology, biogeochemistry, microbial ecology, and natural products chemistry.

EDUCATION
EBS offers a range of degree programs that allows flexibility to accommodate the educational goals of students coming from various backgrounds (biology, chemistry, engineering, etc.) and pursuing a range of career goals. Courses are taught by faculty who are experts in their fields and cover the fundamental and applied aspects of biochemistry, molecular biology, environmental science, environmental engineering, and environmental information technology.

EDUCATION AT OHSU
As Oregon’s only academic health center, Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU) is responsible for educating the physicians, nurses, dentists and other healthcare professionals who will make up the majority of Oregon’s healthcare providers in the future.

OHSU emphasizes patient-centered care, with students learning not only in classrooms but also at patients’ bedsides, physician’s offices and community settings, such as homeless shelters, juvenile detention centers, elementary schools and child care centers throughout Oregon. OHSU seeks to promote lifelong learning among students while instilling a commitment to serve the communities where they live and work.

WORLD-CLASS RESOURCES IN HEALTH, EDUCATION, AND RESEARCH
In 1887, the inaugural class of the University of Oregon Medical School met in the school’s lone building – a two-room converted grocery store in northwest Portland. From that small school we have grown into a world-class teaching hospital and research center that draws in students, scientists, and patients from across the country and around the world. At the same time, we retain our strong commitment to serving our local community, and to treating each patient as a unique individual.

Welcome to the Department of Architecture
The Department of Architecture at Portland State University offers a professional education in architecture, following the four + two model: a four-year BA/BS undergraduate major in Architecture and a two-year Master of Architecture.

We celebrate the study of architecture in a very special setting – downtown Portland. Recognized internationally as a highly innovative center of creativity, and renowned nationally as a locus of sustainable practice, Portland is one of the most livable urban environments in North America.

Our teaching and research are inspired by three priorities:

• Exploring the poetics of material and the communication of cultural meaning
• Speculating upon urban issues and the pleasures and dilemmas of city dwelling
• Promoting community engagement and the application of creative and professional practices toward the common good.

Our growing program is approaching 400 students drawn from diverse backgrounds across the city, region, and nationally and internationally. We occupy the award-winning, recently renovated Shattuck Hall in a vibrant urban setting entwined within the vitality and culture of the city.

We foster cross-disciplinary research and contribute to the newly established Green Building Research Lab, a PSU facility equipped to support a comprehensive range of testing and analysis of the environmental impact of architecture.
