Cooper Mountain Vineyards rests on the slopes of an ancient volcano. Over thousands of years, erosion helped create the terrain, soils and characteristics that make their wines unique. Their vineyards sit on land once farmed by Oregon pioneers who took to the unique location despite its challenges and lack of water. Cooper Mountain has a rich heritage. They are proud to be part of its story.
Cooper Mountain Vineyards got its start in 1978 when Dr. Robert Gross and his wife, Corrine, planted the first Pinot Noir and Chardonnay vines. The two of them tended the vines and carefully nurtured them as they established in the unique soils of Cooper Mountain.
The vines were well tended and matured gracefully to produce true Oregon Pinots. At first, the fruit was sold to other wineries and crafted into wine by some of Oregon's finest winemakers. In 1987, the winery opened to offer its first vintage to the public and began a quest that has brought them to more than 100 acres, four varietals, a commitment to affordable Oregon wines, and an expanded wine tasting room for their visitors.
Cooper Mountain Vineyards is not your standard winery. They are willing to do things that are unheard of in the wine industry. Once considered a bit eccentric, Cooper Mountain Vineyards today is recognized as an innovative leader in a vineyard movement that rapidly is gaining acceptance. Biodynamic® farming has an increasingly important role in vineyard and winery management. The practices that once seemed to have little benefit finally are being understood. On the forefront of this effort is Dr. Robert j. Gross, the owner of Cooper Mountain vineyards and winery, and Gerry Sanchez, their vineyard manager.
Biodynamic® practices are relevant because the use of natural preparations, rather than manmade chemicals, works to enhance the vines by repairing and building their soils to provide ideal growing conditions. Beneficial cover crops grow naturally and encourage equally beneficial insects. Their soil samples reveal active microorganisms that are of great benefit to soil environment. These practices, in the end — in the bottle — result in wines that truly represent their roots.
At Cooper Mountain Vineyards they put their passion and committment into creating the finest wines from the finest vines!
