March 14th, 2007
Establishing trust is very important in the patient - dentist relationship
By: John Buckle

Anxiety or fearing the dentist is an issue that some people have, and something that is somewhat difficult to overcome. This fear stops normal people from visiting the dentist to maintain the health of their teeth. The best way to keep healthy is by preventing dental issues before they get a grip. Those that suffer from anxiety will use the simplest reason not going to a dentist, this simply makes things worse.

When someone suffering from dental anxiety gets round to seeing a dental practioner, it is not unusual that it results in major dentistry. Though they aren't always aware that six monthly consultations to their dentist is the only way to keep teeth in top condition and avoid decay before it is serious

There are approved ways to get the better of your dental anxiety. For instance in extreme cases it might be necessary to administer a sedative. Sedatives are administered by breathing or by an injection to the arm. Being sedated will calm the nerves though you are normally awake and able of talking to your dentist.  Sometimes natural potions can achieve in a similar effect. Hypnosis, acupuncture, controlled breathing are just some of the methods they can look into.

Dental anxiety might result from an experience from someone else's experience that can have left a painful experience that can remain indefinitely. Something resulting in leaves a painful memory can leave a fear that is out of proportion. Dentists aren't bad people but just such an impression can make a patient feel that way.

You should ask of those you know as well as friends and family if they would recommend a compassionate dental practioner. When you visit for your first consultation refrain from putting any concerns you might have, this will help put your concerns to bed. It might also be worth remembering that you are paying their wage and it is their job to make you more at ease. A dental practioner should never make you feel intimidated, it is down to them to make the visit as pleasant as possible.

Establishing trust is very important in the patient - dentist relationship, you will be seeing their dentist every six months. When going to the dentist on your first appointment you should let him know about your dental anxiety. If he isnt willing to discuss it further or wont help to you overcome your fears, you should to find another dentist.

You can always tell a successful dentist are by the type of facilities they use, dentists who have many customers and professional looking offices, have usually established themselves and their practice and proven they are indeed the best. A dentist with lots of customers has them for a reason and that reason is normally because people are satisfied with that dentist and are confident in the service and given.

If dental anxiety is an issue you are trying to come to terms with be sure to let your dentists know at the earliest time you can. This will allow them to work you to overcome your fear. Over time you will find that your fear doesn't worry you anymore as you establish a great relationship with your dentist.

It is possible to get over your concerns you might have had, it will take time but eventually your anxieties will reside and before you know it will be seeing your dentist without thinking about it.
