The newest cars are sturdy, inexpensive, and are not yet made in the U.S. Renault-Nissan opened a plant in India on April 4 to produce a $3,000 car. They plan to produce model in the future that will cost only $2,500. India's Tata Motors also plans to launch a $2,500 car. It has four doors, a 33-horsepower engine, and a top speed of around 80 mph. One key is Tata's low-cost engineers who trim spending to the bone, says Tata Group Chairman Ratan N. Tata.
