Portland's Best Roller Skating ~ Oaks Amusement Park
Oaks Park offers the best Rollerskating and old fashioned fun in the Portland area. The park's roller-skating rink clearly harkens back to a different era of entertainment, but it is still very popular. It is one of the oldest continuously operating roller rinks in the country and the only one with a live Wurlitzer organ. Skate rentals are also available.
The park originally opened in 1905, and has survived the demise of the streetcars, the introduction of television and video games, and several floods. This isn't Disneyworld or anything close to a high tech park, but there are enough fun rides for both the older kids as well as many milder rides for the younge thrill seekers.
Bes.ides roller skating, there are games of skill and chance, Oaks Park offers a sedately scary tunnel of love, a giant slide. New rides are in the works as well as the remodeling of some of the buildings. Picnic tables and fireplaces are available for family use. Oaks Park does not have any rules prohibiting bringing in your own food. You can purchase the usual amusement park menu of cotton candy and deepfried "food-on-a-stick" refreshments. Oaks Park is also able to accomodate childrens birthday parties or anyother private party for large groups. They even offer sessions and activities for your preschool through middle school aged kids
The park is open throughout the year, but its busy season is clearly during the summer. It also sponsors Fourth of July fireworks. Gate admission is free, but rides, games, and roller-skating carry fees. Oaks Park is located on SE Spokane Street at the east end of the Sellwood bridge on the Willamette River.
