The Hoyt Arboretum is a part of Portland's Washington Park. The park has more than 900 species of trees and shrubs to observe. The park covers 183 acres and 10 miles of trails with striking views of the city, Mount Hood and Mount St. Helens, the Coast Range, and the rolling hills to the west, north, and east. There are many species of trees in the park from Oaks, maples, cherry trees, Douglas fir, redwoods, blue spruce, Himalayan spruce, and bristlecone pine to name a few of them. The keep the park fresh and cool. In the fall the park is vibrant with color.
Most of the species in the park are labeled. The Hoyt Arboretum also offers tours for those who want to learn more about the local trees and plants. Tours are offered during the weekends from April through August. The trails twist up and down the hills, so make sure you wear comfortable and sturdy shoes. There is 3/4 mile section of the Bristlecone Trail that is paved for wheelchair access and offers a good introduction to Washington Park.
The grounds are open from 5:00 A.M. to 10:00 P.M. The beautiful visitor center is open from 9:00 A.M until 4:00 P.M. and until 3:00 P.M. on Saturday. It's closed on major holidays and Sunday.
