For this benefit performance, BodyVox will feature repertoire from their internationally-acclaimed production “Reverie.” This evening of contemporary dance creates a world of beauty, strength, and delight with a bit of humor, and the human richness that all of that affords. Both complex and refreshingly simple, Reverie is inspired by the impressionist era and builds from an overriding belief in the power of beauty.
One of the most unique international projects of its kind, Jardin Portland brings together the Sister Cities of Portland and Guadalajara to create a public park that will provide a global model for landscape design, environmental sustainability and cultural, tourism and educational exchange. The Jardin, located in Bosque Colomos, Guadalajara’s largest central-city park, will highlight Portland internationally as a leader in environmental best practices, including hands-on learning experiences in its Verde Learning Center. The park will include replicas of some of our region’s most cherished features, such as Multnomah Falls, Pioneer Square and the Salmon Street Fountain. It will also showcase original works by Portland-area artists.
BodyVox traveled to Guadalajara with the PGSCA in 2007 to perform in the first-ever “Portland Week in Guadalajara”, which included demonstrations in the culinary arts, music performances, lectures and other events to share Pacific Northwest culture with the people of Guadalajara. The dance troupe continues its support for the organization with this performance, which donates ticket proceeds to support the construction of Jardin Portland.
BodyVox entertains audiences with breathtaking physicality, striking imagery and laugh-inducing wit. The central theme of Reverie, like Jardin Portland, is beauty as a transformative element. First performed in 2002, the whimsical production features a dance of lilies amongst bamboo stalks. Reverie was conceived and choreographed by BodyVox’s founding Artistic Directors, Jamey Hampton and Ashley Roland. “It speaks to the idea that humanity, beauty, culture and art must prevail,” said Una Loughran, BodyVox General Manager.
Conceived by BodyVox’s founding Artistic Directors Jamey Hampton and Ashley Roland in the months surrounding 9/11, the horror that unfolded on that day led to the creation of a show with beauty as it’s central theme. Jamey Hampton recalls “As we gathered in the studio that day and those that followed, we came to believe that a program with beauty as its central theme could be a powerful statement: art must prevail, humanity must prevail, culture, knowledge and freedom of expression, indeed beauty must prevail. We named the program “Reverie.” implying that this is one to sweep us up and carry us away.”
Since the show’s Portland premiere in 2001, BodyVox has performed Reverie on tour throughout the US. The work was featured in the company’s 2004 New York debut prompting Jennifer Dunning of the New York Times to write:
“BodyVox, based in Portland, Ore., approaches dance with a breezy freshness and simplicity that is all its own.”
Newsday dance reviewer Jeremy Caplan proclaimed:
“BodyVox’s superb program at the Joyce Theater eclectically blends film with dance and grace with humor.”
That same year BodyVox was invited to perform Reverie at Tokyo’s International “We Love Dance” festival.
Reverie is made up of eight original dances and two short films. For its return to the Portland stage, Hampton and Roland have updated the show to include Lane Hunter’s “Squared” developed in BodyVox’s new work incubator “First Impressions”.
BodyVox builds upon this tradition of creative excellence with a unique voice that is clearly influenced by its Northwest Roots. BodyVox is a dynamic organization, known and loved for the fresh inventiveness of its work. Since its inception, BodyVox has developed significant dance work that includes six full-length productions, multiple chamber works, ten films, and three operas. BodyVox actively tours throughout the US and the company’s performances have been warmly received by audiences of all ages drawing rave reviews in local and national press.
